10th Anniversary | Decatur Il Photographer
Happy 10th Anniversary to HGP!
Fourteen years ago I picked up a camera. I was treating myself to getting into grad school with something I had always been interested in, a DSLR. Little did I know it was going to take me down a career path I never expected.
From the time I could remember, I wanted to work with horses. I lived and breathed them since I was in fourth grade and went to college for them. I really thought I’d be living on a farm working with them in some capacity. Life, as it goes, evolved into a career in property management instead of an equine career. Horses became a memory as I moved into life in central Illinois with Daniel.
HGP's 10th Anniversary
In 2013 Daniel and I couldn’t agree on daycare for Gemma once she came along and I ended up staying home with her. My camera came out more and more and I found a love for capturing all of the sweet phases of her babyhood. In November of 2013 I sprung for studio lights and diffusers and got to work. There are so, so many bad pictures of sweet Gemma in that time frame. Yet, I still love them, because they are of my baby, and as we all know- I can’t get that time back.
In April of 2014, I registered HGP with the state and county and did all the things to becoming a legit business. The little 200 square foot back room of my house became my storage and studio all in one, and holy hell did I fill it with all the props and all the things. That let to me finding my first commercial space in September of 2015 where I learned alllllll the things not to do the hard way.
In those 10 years I welcomed Ella Kate into the family. The studio suffered broken water pipes that destroyed my first studio- during the pandemic. Daniel went full time self-employed as well while we homeschooled my girls for a year. Lastly, we moved to our new home where I built my custom studio. It might be smaller than the last one.... but. It's mine. It's beautiful. And I have no doubt I'll still be able to serve my clients just as well.
